Since this is a multi-effects pedal, the knobs have to perform multiple functions. We’ll dive into some of the specifics a bit later, but suffice to say there’s already a lot of effects to play with and the promise of more on the way. And Majeski is actively taking suggestions from the community about effects he should add next. That number has since doubled, bringing the total number of available effects on the Arcades to 64. When it launched in late April there were four cards each with eight effects. But it wasn’t until 2020 that it would finally see the light of day (after some pandemic-related delays). It’s the shapeshifting power of the FV-1 that drove Majeski to dabble with the concept of a card-based multi-effects pedal years ago. For something originally introduced in 2006 it’s proven surprisingly resilient and malleable. (Don’t worry, I won’t.) It can be found in pedals from the likes of Chase Bliss, Walrus Audio, Red Panda, EHX and countless other manufacturers, big and small. Now, I could easily spend 3,000 words talking about the wonders of the FV-1. It’s also built around one of the most flexible digital signal processors (DSPs) out there: the FV-1. Even if it looks a bit too old nowadays, the game can still hold its own, and the difficulty level should keep you on edge level after level. The Arcades, on the other hand, is a pretty straightforward pedal, with lots of thoughtful interface choices. Enjoy a bit of the good old timesĪll things considered, DemonStar - Classic is exactly what you expect it to be, especially if you are familiar with the genre. The visual quality is nothing out of the ordinary, but it should be enough to keep your imagination active all the way through. However, your weapons are reset if you die, which means that you revert back to the most basic attack. Speaking of which, your ship can be upgraded as well by collecting power-ups dropped by destroyed enemy ships. Boss fights are very challenging as well, although they get a lot easier to handle once you figure out their attack patterns. The ships get more powerful as you manage to reach the later stages, and you have to pay attention to their deadly attacks. Gameplay-wise, all you need to do is survive the constant onslaught of enemies and shoot back to destroy them as quickly as possible. Hunt power-ups and upgrade your weapons to deal more damage In fact, the game is just a series of levels put together with no real connection between them, with the end goal being to clear them all. You do not need to know too much about the plot to have fun, on the other hand, so you can pretty much just ignore the story altogether. The story is nothing out of the ordinary either, since it’s the same old rant about the future and wars between species. In short, the formula is more or less the same, which means that you have to pilot a spaceship and use your onboard arsenal to destroy everything in your path. There are not many original concepts at play, but the game can still be tons of fun in the right hands. Fight your way to the final boss, the DemonstarĭemonStar - Classic is a retro shoot ‘em up that tries to revive the genre and keep the gameplay as classic as possible. You don’t need much to have fun in space, though, which is why it’s always a blast to shoot lasers at alien spaceships. On the other hand, the underlying formula did not change all that much in the meantime, given the fact that you do more or less the same thing nowadays as well. The shoot ‘em up genre can trace its roots back to classics like Asteroids and Space Invaders, although they have come a long way since then.
